When it comes to deciding which digital nomad visa is right for you, it’s important to consider the tax implications that come with it. To help you maximize your digital nomad lifestyle, these are the best digital nomad visas with tax benefits

Understanding how digital nomads pay taxes is one of the most complicated parts of living a location-independent lifestyle (along with figuring out visas, of course!)

But when you decide to apply for one of these digital nomad visas with tax benefits, the rules around where and how you pay taxes become a bit simpler. Plus, you could save hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars in taxes!

Let’s dive into the best digital nomad visas with tax benefits for remote workers to help you make the most out of your life abroad.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

Before we get into the details of specific digital nomad visas, I want to first explain what they are.

Digital nomad visas allow remote workers, and often their immediate family members, to temporarily live in a foreign country. Usually, these visas are valid for a year and can be renewed for multiple years. Some of these visas can actually lead to permanent residency after a few years, too!

It’s important to note that these visas do not allow applicants to seek local employment or conduct local business. Their income to support their life abroad must come from a remote job as an employee, freelancer, or business owner.

Of the more than 50 digital nomad visas available, it’s important to understand the exact requirements and implications of the visa as they are all different. For example, some digital nomad visas are immigrant visas, while others specifically state the applicant still retains tourist status.

Do You Pay Taxes When You Have a Digital Nomad Visa?

I wish the answer was a simple yes or no. But as with almost everything pertaining to the digital nomad lifestyle, it is a bit more complicated.

There are some digital nomad visas that require holders to pay local income tax such as Spain and Portugal

But, there are some digital nomad visas with tax benefits that either relieve you from the liability of paying local taxes or offer a reduced tax rate.

When planning to relocate to a new country with a digital nomad visa, understanding the tax implications is an absolute must! We always recommend speaking with a tax professional who is well-versed in international tax situations to help you understand your tax liabilities.

Croatia offers a 12-month non-renewable digital nomad visa to remote workers and their immediate family members. During this year, you will not owe local tax while living in Croatia.

It’s important to note that once the visa expires, you must leave the country for at least six months before reapplying for the visa if you wish to return.

As one of the few tax-free digital nomad visas in Europe, Croatia is an awesome opportunity for those digital nomads who don’t want to commit to living somewhere for more than a year.

The beauty of Curaçao’s digital nomad visa is that there is no minimum income requirement, making it one of the most available digital nomad visas with tax benefits. Plus, the online application system takes just two weeks to process.

As one of the more affordable islands in the Caribbean to live in, Curaçao is an underdog when it comes to digital nomad hotspots. So you can have an authentic, local experience with your immediate family members living in Paradise.

Dubai

Visa Term: 1 year

Tax Liability: No Tax

Dubai has long been a favorite destination for digital nomads who do not want to pay income taxes. It’s famous for being a haven to save on taxes while living an elevated lifestyle. And Dubai’s digital nomad visa makes it super easy to do it!

With a flat monthly income requirement of $3,500 per month and an online application process that takes just a week to receive approval, Dubai’s digital nomad visa is one of the best when it comes to ease and tax benefits.

While there is no limit on how long you can stay in Dubai, you must reapply for the visa each year to extend your stay.

Ecuador

Visa Term: 2 years

Tax Liability: No Tax

Live in Ecuador, one of the safest countries in South America, for up to two years with the digital nomad visa while not paying local income tax. Since Ecuador does not tax foreign-earned income, digital nomads can stay in the country without tax liabilities.

Whether you spend your time exploring the rain forests or traveling to the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador is full of adventurous activities for digital nomads and their family members.

And while the country does not charge income tax for digital nomads, it is important to prepare for unreliable wifi in certain parts of the country. If you’re ready to be a savvy remote worker while saving on taxes, then Ecuador could be a great place for you!

Greece

Visa Term: 1 year

Tax Liability: No Tax

Soak up the sun on one of the hundreds of beautiful islands in Greece for up to one year with the digital nomad visa—while living tax-free!

Now, the tax implications of Greece’s digital nomad visa can be a bit tricky. This is because there are two types of stays available through the visa regime.

  1. You can apply for the 12-month digital nomad visa at a Greek consulate in your country of residence and stay in the country tax-free.
  2. You could apply for the two-year residence permit under the digital nomad visa law with unlimited renewals and leads to permanent residency in Greece, but you will become a tax resident.

So, if you want to live in Greece without paying local taxes as a digital nomad, the only option is to apply for the 12-month digital nomad visa, which is non-renewable. To apply, you must submit your application through a Greek consulate in your country of residence. The processing time takes just 10 business days.

If you wish to stay longer than one year, then you could apply for the two-year residence permit while already in Greece (either as a tourist or along with the digital nomad visa) and become a tax resident.

malta - digital nomad visas with tax benefits
Valletta, Malta

Malta

Visa Term: 4 years

Tax Liability: 10%

Malta is known for having tax-friendly regimes within Europe and they extend those regimes to their digital nomad visa.

Remote workers can live in Malta for up to four years with the Nomad Residence Permit and pay a flat 10% tax on their income. This is one of the best opportunities for digital nomads who want to live in Europe for more than one year without paying high tax rates.

Plus, Malta is an English-speaking country, making it easy to integrate with the community and navigate your new lifestyle there.

With the online application, processing time takes just 60 days, after which you can enter Malta and apply for your one-year renewable residence permit with your immediate family members.
