Remote workers have a unique opportunity to relocate to a unique and affordable country with the Armenia digital nomad visa

While not officially called the Armenia digital nomad visa, this law “On Foreigners” residence permit is perfect for digital nomads who want to set up a life in Armenia while working remotely. So, in this article, we will refer to the residence permit scheme as the Armenia digital nomad visa.

It’s extremely simple to obtain the Armenian digital nomad visa if you are willing to start a business in the country. Now, this isn’t as complicated as it may sound. Many digital nomads can register as sole proprietors in Armenia and work as freelancers with clients worldwide.

The Armenia digital nomad visa grants a one-year temporary residence permit. With this permit, you will have the same opportunities as Armenian citizens and have access to the national healthcare, education system, and more. The residence permit is renewable.

There is no minimum stay requirement for the Armenia digital nomad visa. However, if you do stay in the country for more than 183 days out of the year, you will be considered a tax resident.

Applicants can also bring their families, including spouses, children, and parents, with them to Armenia.

After living in Armenia legally for three years, you may apply for Armenian citizenship too.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa is a temporary residence permit for remote workers to relocate abroad.

Usually, these digital nomad visas allow applicants to live in the country for one to two years. However, with the Armenia digital nomad visa, digital nomads can live in the country for five years with the option to renew.

Normally, a digital nomad visa does not allow applicants to engage in local economic activity, such as working for a local company. However, the structure of Armenia’s digital nomad visa requires applicants to register a business in Armenia to receive a residence permit.

A digital nomad visa is great for those remote workers who want to settle down abroad temporarily without moving around every three to four months.

Armenia Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

As with any digital nomad visa, you must meet certain requirements to be eligible to apply for the Armenia digital nomad visa.

  • Valid Passport – You must have a valid passport at the time of applying
  • Work Remotely – You must work as a freelancer or business owner
  • Willing to Open a Business in Armenia – You must be willing to register as a sole proprietor or “Private Entrepreneur” in Armenia

As you can see, there aren’t many requirements. You also will not have to provide bank statements or meet a minimum income requirement.

Steps to Apply

You can apply for the Armenia digital nomad visa both inside the country or remotely. When applying remotely, we highly recommend working with an immigration lawyer to file your application and documents.

Step 1: Register as a Sole Proprietor

The first thing you must do to apply for the Armenia digital nomad visa is to register as a sole proprietor and obtain an Armenian tax ID.

You will have to submit the following documents to the State Register of Legal Entities in Armenia.

  • Completed Application
  • Original Passport
  • Copy of Passport (translated to Armenian and apostilled)
  • Proof of State Fee Payment

The state fee for registering a sole proprietorship is 3,000 Armenia Dram (AMD), or about $7.60 USD.

You can register your business in Armenia remotely, but you will need to hire a lawyer to act on your behalf. This requires you to give them power of attorney.

Step 2: Apply for Residence Permit

Once you have established your business and have reported your business’s income to the tax office, you can apply for your residence permit.

You can apply for either a temporary residence permit (valid for one year and renewable) or a permanent residence permit (valid for five years and renewable.)

You must submit the following documents to apply for your residence permit:

  • Original passport
  • Passport-size photos (35x45mm)
  • Copy of passport (translated to Armenian and apostilled)
  • Medical certificate
  • Proof of Business Ownership in Armenia

You will also be required to pay a residence permit fee. For the temporary residence permit, the fee is 105,000 AMD or $264 USD. The fee for the permanent residence permit is 140,000 AMD or $354 USD.

If you are applying for a residence permit remotely, you must send your physical passport to Armenia.

Step 3: Wait for Approval

It can take about two months to receive your residence permit.

While waiting for your residence permit, you can stay in Armenia and conduct business and your life.

Armenia for Digital Nomads

You will find a thriving community of digital nomads in the capital city of Yerevan. With a stable wifi connection and plenty of coworking spaces and cafes to work from, digital nomads are quickly calling Armenia home. Yerevan is also rated as one of the safest cities in the world.

Getting the Armenia digital nomad visa also allows you to take advantage of the low cost of living in the country and the favorable tax rates. With no tax on inheritance or gifts and low rates for businesses, it can be a great place to set up your remote business.

When spending time in the country, it can also be helpful to find ways to learn Armenian, such as online courses, language apps, or language exchange meetups. Just 40% of Armenia’s population speak basic English while 24% speak advanced Russian. So, learning to read and speak Armenian can definitely help you integrate into the country you now call home.

With beautiful landscapes and historic towns, Armenia is a unique and up-and-coming place for digital nomads. With such close proximity to Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan, digital nomads can easily travel throughout the area.
