Digital nomads can live in Norway for up to two years with the countryโ€™s independent contractor visa.

While the official term isnโ€™t a digital nomad visa, digital nomads who are self-employed may be eligible to apply to it. Therefore, we will be referring to it as the Norway digital nomad visa for the sake of this article.

With a fairly straightforward and easy process to apply for the Norway digital nomad visa, you can start living your remote lifestyle in a land of beauty, snow, and rich in history.

Itโ€™s important to note that digital nomads who receive this visa will have to pay local taxes while living in Norway and apply for a VAT number.

Norwayโ€™s digital nomad visa has been around for quite a while now. The country is one of many in Europe that offers digital nomad visas

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa allows remote workers to receive a residence permit to live in a foreign country. This visa does not typically allow holders to engage in economic activities, such as getting a job, in the country.

However, in the case of the Norway digital nomad visa, the visa holder must have at least one Norwegian client. Weโ€™ll get more into this later, though.

Digital nomad visas are perfect for traveling remote workers who want to settle down for a year and really get to know a specific destination.

Norway Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

As with every visa, there are certain requirements you must meet to be eligible to apply for it. Below are the requirements for the Norway digital nomad visa.

  • Valid Passport – Your passport must be valid when applying for the visa
  • Proof of Self-Employment – You must prove that your business is established outside of Norway
  • Earn at least 35,719โ‚ฌ per year – Your income must meet the income requirement
  • Proof of Income – Bank statements proving how much you earned
  • Contract with Norwegian Client – You must have a signed contract with a Norwegian client agreeing to pay at least minimum wage for a skilled worker

Steps to Apply

The process to apply for the Norway digital nomad visa is concise and moves pretty quickly if you have all of your documents in order. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to apply.

Step 1: Gather Documents

Before you begin the application process, itโ€™s important to get all of your documents in order. Youโ€™ll need the following:

Be sure to bring all original documents and copies of everything to your visa appointment. All documents must either be in Norwegian or English.

Step 2: Print the UDI Checklist

Youโ€™ll notice that the last document we mention is the UDI checklist. It is critical that you complete the checklist online, print it, sign it, and bring it with you to your visa appointment.

There are a variety of questions at the bottom of the checklist. Be sure to answer all necessary questions.

Step 3: Submit Application

You can submit your Norway digital nomad visa application and documents in two different ways.

If you are already in Norway, you can apply for the visa at the police station. Be aware that you must prove that you are in the country legally at this time.

The second option is to go through a Norwegian embassy or consulate from abroad. You must make an appointment where you will submit your application and required documents.

Itโ€™s important to note that you may need additional documents depending on the embassy or consulate.

Step 4: Wait for Approval

After submitting your documents and application, it could take about four months to receive an answer. However, this waiting time does depend on your country of origin.

Norway for Digital Nomads

If you donโ€™t mind cold weather and unique sunlight hours, then Norway could be a very interesting destination to live as a digital nomad. With a quality of life and extremely friendly people, digital nomads are quick to feel at home while in Norway.

With excellent wifi connections throughout the country and a plethora of coworking spaces and cafes, cities like Oslo are thriving digital nomad destinations. However, itโ€™s important to note that the cost of living in Norway is quite high compared to other digital nomad destinations.

Other than bustling cities and a large population of English-speaking locals, Norway has plenty to offer. From exquisite nature like the fjords and ski slopes to the magnificent northern lights, Norway is a truly once-in-a-lifetime destination that you can make your home for two years with their independent contractor visa.
