Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa: How to Apply (3 Steps)

Last Updated on 7 January 2025 by Brittany

Taiwan will be the latest country in Asia to welcome remote workers officially by launching the Taiwan digital nomad visa in January 2025.

In an effort to attract at least 10% of the 35 million digital nomads, Taiwan is offering the opportunity for remote workers to stay in the country for up to six months. This is a very similar scheme to Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa and Japan’s digital nomad visa, which both allow stays of up to 180 days.

The Taiwan digital nomad visa was proposed together with other solutions to boost Taiwan’s economy, such as reducing the time spent to obtain permanent residency to just one year for top-tier foreign talent with the Taiwan Gold Card.

Applicants may apply from their country of residence at a Taiwanese mission or embassy or directly in the Taiwan if they are in the country legally.

It is unclear whether the Taiwan digital nomad visa will allow applicants to include a spouse or dependents.

As more information is released about the Taiwan digital nomad visa, we will update this article accordingly. To be the first to know about updates, join our newsletter to receive digital nomad visa news directly to your inbox!

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa allows remote workers and sometimes their family members to live abroad for a year or more.

These temporary residence permits let remote workers immerse themselves into a foreign culture and lifestyle while retaining their remote roles. It’s important to note that these visas do not allow applicants to seek local employment – with just a couple of exceptions.

Select digital nomad visas can lead to permanent residency after a certain number of years living in the country as well, making these remote work visa opportunities ideal for long-term goals.

Taiwan Digital Nomad Visa Requirements

While Taiwan has not released any information about the eligibility requirements for the digital nomad visa, we can expect it to require some of the following based on similar programs in the region.

  • Valid Passport – Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have blank pages.
  • No Entry Visa Required – You must be from a country that can enter Taiwan without an entry visa
  • Work Remotely – You must prove that you work remotely as an employee, freelancer, or business owner for companies or clients outside of Taiwan
  • Earn at least $40,000 USD per year if over 30 years old – You must prove that you have earned at least $40,000 per year for at least one of the last two years
  • Earn at least $20,000 USD per year if between the ages of 20 and 29 – You must prove that you have earned the required amount in at least one of the last two years

Step 2: Submit Application

If you are located outside of Taiwan, then you must submit your application to a Taiwanese embassy or mission. You can view a list of worldwide locations here.

You must request an appointment at the embassy or mission to submit your Taiwan digital nomad visa application and documents. There may be an interview as well.

Please note that each mission operates individually and some locations may not offer appointments for the Taiwan digital nomad visa at this time.

Additionally, if you are already in Taiwan with a visa exemption or a non-extendable tourist visa, you may submit your Taiwan digital nomad visa application within 10 working days before your stay allowance expires. You may submit your application and documents to the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA) or one of the Central, Southwestern, Southern, or Eastern Taiwan Offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

If applying from within Taiwan, it is important to note that if you do not obtain the digital nomad visa before your current stay allowance expires, you must leave the country.

Step 3: Wait for Approval

At this time, we do not have a timeline of when you can expect to receive an answer regarding your Taiwan digital nomad visa application.

However, if the authorities request additional documentation, you must do so within three working days of receiving the notification.

Taiwan for Digital Nomads

While Southeast Asia is the main area where digital nomads flock to, Taiwan is a hidden gem that could become the next digital nomad hotspot in Asia.

Taiwan, a vibrant blend of modernity and tradition, is a haven for digital nomads seeking an enriching and efficient work environment. With its high-speed internet and reliable digital infrastructure, Taiwan ensures seamless remote work experiences, while its affordable cost of living stretches budgets further without sacrificing quality.

The islandโ€™s safety and the welcoming nature of its people make it an ideal spot for those wanting to immerse themselves in a new culture without the usual anxieties of being in a foreign place. Plus, Taiwanโ€™s efficient public transportation system, which includes the high-speed rail and extensive bus networks, makes navigating the island convenient and stress-free.

Taipei, the bustling capital, offers a perfect mix of urban excitement and cultural depth. From the towering Taipei 101, where digital nomads can work from skyscraping heights, to the vibrant night markets like Shilin, bursting with culinary delights, the city caters to diverse tastes and lifestyles. The National Palace Museum provides a deep dive into Chinese art and history, while nearby hiking spots like Elephant Mountain offer breathtaking views and a refreshing break from screen time. For those looking to balance work with leisure, Taipeiโ€™s plethora of coworking spaces and vibrant expatriate community make it easy to network and thrive.

Beyond Taipei, cities like Taichung and Kaohsiung present unique charms. Taichung, known for its cultural landmarks and artistic vibe, hosts the famous Rainbow Village and bustling Fengjia Night Market. Meanwhile, Kaohsiung, with its stunning Love River and the innovative Pier-2 Art Center, offers a waterfront lifestyle rich in creativity. Historical Tainan, the oldest city in Taiwan, invites digital nomads to explore its ancient forts and temples, offering a more traditional Taiwanese experience.

Together, these cities showcase the diverse experiences Taiwan has to offer, making it an ideal destination for digital nomads seeking a dynamic blend of work and exploration.
