Genki Native International Health Insurance for Digital Nomads
Embracing the digital nomad lifestyle means going against the grain and figuring things out things like taxes and health insurance on your own. With Genki Native international health insurance, digital nomads have one less thing to think about when it comes to their health, safety, and general well-being.
Finding the right digital nomad health insurance for your location-independent lifestyle may not be at the top of your to-do list. Of course, planning which country you’ll explore next and booking airline tickets is going to be the more exciting part of being a digital nomad. But taking care of yourself and getting international health insurance should definitely be a top priority, especially when living such a whirlwind lifestyle!
Think about it—the last thing you want to deal with while gallivanting across the world with your laptop is how to go to a doctor when you’re sick or get vaccinations up to date. With Genki Native international health insurance, you have a safety net (both financially and supportively) when traveling or living abroad.
While there are a handful of digital nomad health insurance options out there, we’re doing a deep dive into the Genki Native international health insurance so you can decide if it’s right for your lifestyle.
Why Digital Nomads Need International Health Insurance
Digital nomads are not your average traveler. They often spend more time abroad than in their home country. This means that a simple travel insurance just isn’t going to cut it when it comes to their health while living and traveling abroad for months at a time.
They need comprehensive international health insurance that will take care of their preventative care appointments and medical needs in their everyday life—not just emergencies.
Routine and Preventative Care
Going to the doctor isn’t reserved for when you’re not feeling well. Annual check-ups and blood tests are important for staying on top of your health. Dental cleanings twice a year are super important, especially if you have a sweet tooth, and try every dessert possible when traveling. And for women, having an exam with a gynecologist each year is essential.
All of these non-emergency appointments and care can be covered with an international health insurance policy. No matter what country a digital nomad is in, they can book these preventative care appointments. Just because you hop on a plane to a new country every few months doesn’t give you the excuse to let your health fall through the cracks.
Emergency Care
Accidents happen. Serious illnesses happen.
In case you need emergency care or hospitalization with follow-up appointments, international health insurance will take care of you! It’s already super scary getting really sick or having to go to a hospital in a foreign country; the last thing you want to worry about is racking up a bill that you can’t pay out of pocket (say goodbye to your next plane ticket!)
Digital Nomad Visa Applications
With the popular trend of digital nomad visas, many remote workers and digital nomads are opting to relocate to foreign countries for a year or more.
One of the standard requirements for these digital nomad visas is to have a comprehensive international health insurance policy with coverage for the duration of the visa. For example, Türkiye requires digital nomad visa holders to have an international health insurance policy with coverage of at least 30,000€ for the entire year the visa is valid.
What is Genki Native International Health Insurance?
Genki Native international health insurance is a comprehensive insurance for digital nomads and expats who spend six months or more abroad during the year.
Genki Native was introduced in early 2024, replacing the former version, Genki Resident.
Designed by digital nomads, for digital nomads, Genki Native international insurance is the solution most location-independent travelers have been searching for.
You can choose from two Genki Native packages: Basic and Premium.
Comprehensive Coverage
Unlike travel insurance, Genki Native international health insurance has comprehensive coverage for medical needs in every single country – including the US and Canada.
Genki Native international health insurance covers the following:
If you choose Genki Native Premium, you’ll also have coverage of:
As you can see, Genki Native covers a TON of medical procedures, both routine and emergency, to keep you safe and healthy no matter where you are in the world.
Low Deductibles
Depending on which Genki Native international health insurance plan you choose, your deductible can be either 500€ or 1,000€ per year.
This means you must spend this amount before your insurance kicks in to pay for your medical treatments or appointments. This is only for outpatient care. Any inpatient care or hospitalization is fully paid for regardless of whether you’ve met your deductible.
Compared to most health insurance (especially in the United States), these deductibles are pretty low!
Acceptance of Pre-Existing Conditions
If you have a pre-existing condition, like asthma, diabetes, or cancer, it can be super difficult to find international health insurance that will cover you.
Genki Native stands out in the industry because they accept these pre-existing conditions! That means just because you had medical treatments for asthma, cancer, or diabetes in the past, you can still travel fully insured as a digital nomad!
Worldwide Coverage
Genki Native international health insurance offers coverage in every single country worldwide—no exceptions!
They even include coverage in countries with travel warnings.
Plus, there is no maximum limit for the time you spend in a single country while abroad. It even offers emergency coverage in the US and Canada of up to 250,000€ for 30 days per year!
Genki Native will even cover you in your country of citizenship. It’s important to note that this insurance does not replace legally mandated local health insurance.
If you are a US citizen, there is an option to add coverage in your home country for up to six months out of the year.
Free Choice of Doctors and Hospitals
If you’ve ever dealt with local health insurance, you’ve probably been limited to the doctors and hospitals you can go to. Most health insurance companies have a network of doctors and offices that accept the insurance.
With Genki Native international health insurance, you have free choice over which doctor or hospital you go to.
Genki Native Basic vs. Genki Native Premium
I mentioned earlier that there are two versions of the Genki Native international health insurance: Basic and Premium. While both versions cover the necessary medical needs for illnesses, hospitalization, prescriptions, and more, Genki Premium offers more coverage for preventative and lifestyle care.
Medical Benefits
With Genki Basic, your outpatient and inpatient care are included for medical treatments, as well as chronic conditions. This is good in case of illness or accidents.
However, Genki Premium acts more like the health insurance you’re probably used to getting in your home country. This package includes preventative care such as vaccinations and blood tests, dental care, maternity care, vision, and more.
Overall, Genki Premium is almost identical to most local health insurance and offers more comprehensive coverage. We would recommend this version if you’re applying for a digital nomad visa!
Deductible
With Genki Basic, your outpatient deductible is 1,000€ per year.
With Genki Premium, your outpatient deductible is 500€ per year.
Once you have spent this amount out-of-pocket, then your insurance policy will kick in and start footing your medical bills.
Medical Expense Coverage
The amount of medical expense coverage also differs between the Genki Basic and Genki Premium packages.
With Genki Basic, there is a limit of 1€ Million per insurance year. This means if your medical treatments go over this amount in a single year, your insurance will not cover the remainder after 1€ million.
With Genki Premium, there is no maximum coverage limit. No matter how much your medical treatments cost in a single insurance year, Genki Premium is responsible for paying for all of them.
Monthly Premium
One of the major differences between Genki Native Basic and Genki Native Premium is the monthly premium.
While shopping around for digital nomad health insurance, most people put a huge value on the monthly rate they’ll pay for coverage. But sometimes, paying more monthly is more beneficial in the long run.
For Genki Basic, monthly rates start at 180€ for digital nomads between the ages of 20 and 34.
For Genki Premium, monthly rates start at 260€ for digital nomads between the ages of 20 and 34.
Of course, this rate can change depending on your age, pre-existing conditions, if you include coverage in the US, etc.
In our opinion, spending more per month for unlimited medical expense coverage, preventative care, dental, vision, and maternity care is totally worth it—but that’s just us!
What Isn’t Covered by Genki Native International Health Insurance?
Okay, we discussed what is covered by Genki Native international health insurance (which is quite a lot!), but now it’s time to review what is not covered.
Professional Sports Injuries
While sports injuries are covered, professional sports injuries are not.
This means if you are paid to play a sport and are injured during practice or a game, then Genki Native will not cover the treatment for the injury.
Lifestyle Products and Treatments
Preventative care is more than just going to the doctor and having blood tests done (which is covered by Genki Premium!), it can also be taking vitamins, contraceptives, or weight loss products.
Genki Native international health insurance does not cover lifestyle products and treatments such as:
- Potency products
- Hair growth products
- Weight loss drugs or products
- Birth control
- Vitamins, nutrients, and tonics
- Cosmetic products or procedures
Non-Medical Travel-Related Costs
While Genki Native international health insurance is for digital nomads, it does not include travel insurance coverage. This means travel expenses like trip cancellation or interruption, lost or stolen baggage, and flight delays are not covered.
However, if you are looking for short-term travel insurance that does cover this, you may want to consider Genki Explorer!
