What is the Croatia Digital Nomad Visa?

The Croatia digital nomad visa was first introduced in 2021. It allows remote workers and immediate family members to live in the country for 12 months.

This is an excellent opportunity for digital nomads who want to explore the gorgeous beaches and national parks this country has to offer. It is full of great cities for digital nomads to call home, too.

Plus, Croatia joined the Schengen Area and adopted the Euro in 2023, allowing digital nomad visa holders to travel visa-free through 26 additional countries.

Croatia’s digital nomad visa is one of the few that allow you to apply while already in the country as a tourist. This makes it easier to find an address of accommodations and obtain appointments at immigration offices.

It’s important to note that the Croatia digital nomad visa is non-renewable. If you wish to stay longer, you must leave the country for at least three months and reapply for the visa.

Additionally, Croatia is one of the digital nomad visas with no tax implications, making it favorable amongst many remote workers.

Passport Photos

You must submit two copies of color passport photos no older than six months to be printed on your residence card. The photo size must be 45 mm x 35 mm and meet Schengen visa photo requirements.

Proof of Purpose (Remote Work Contracts)

To prove that you meet the remote work requirement, you must submit documented proof that you can work 100% remotely.

For employees, this can take the form of an employer contract stating that you are allowed to work remotely through telecommunication.

Freelancers can show client contracts that also state that the work will be completed remotely and there is no requirement for in-person meetings.

Business owners can also prove their remote work allowance by submitting documentation of their business registration and the nature of their business.

Proof of Income (Payslips or Bank Statements)

To prove that you meet the minimum income requirement, you must submit payslips and bank statements.

You may submit one of the following documents for the Croatia digital nomad visa application to prove your income or savings:

  1. Bank statements from the last 12 months showing your balance
  2. Payslips from the last 6 months showing your income

You must submit the criminal record from either the last country you lived in for at least one year immediately before coming to Croatia or your home country.

These documents must be legalized with an apostille if the issuing country is part of the Hague Convention or notarized.

For US citizens and residents, you must obtain an FBI background check. We recommend doing this while in the country, but it is possible to obtain it from abroad

If you’re abroad and need your criminal background check apostilled, check out our partner Apostille USA for fast-track apostille services.

Temporary Address in Croatia

Even before you enter Croatia you must provide a temporary address of where you will stay. This can be a hotel reservation, Airbnb or VRBO booking, or a lease agreement with a local landlord.

This is one of the most important documents for the Croatia digital nomad visa application, as it will determine which police and immigration office you will attend to get your biometrics done and residence card.

If you plan to bring a spouse or children under the age of 18, then you must also submit proof of your relationship.

This can be done through the following documents:

  • Adoption Certificate

Since these documents originate from a federal authority, they must be apostilled or notarized for valid use in Croatia.

You may submit your visa application online through the official immigration portal.

If you are already in Croatia, then you may submit a physical visa application (Form F-1a)
