Azerbaijan Digital Nomad Visa: Launching in 2027-2028

Azerbaijan has announced plans to introduce a digital nomad visa, giving remote professionals a new opportunity to live at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

The proposed Azerbaijan digital nomad visa will create a dedicated immigration route for foreign remote workers earning income from abroad. According to the country’s 2026-2030 tourism development program, the visa is expected to launch electronically in 2027 or 2028 after the government studies similar programs and amends its Migration Code.

Since the Azerbaijan digital nomad visa is not available yet, we do not have confirmation about the details such as income requirement or validity period. However, we will update this article as new information is released.

What Is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa allows remote workers to temporarily live in another country while earning income from foreign companies or clients. These visas suit remote employees, self-employed individuals, and business owners. 

The most important thing to understand about a digital nomad visa is that the applicant may not seek local employment or conduct local business. All work and income must be generated from outside the country. 

In most cases, applicants can include family members in their digital nomad visa application. This creates a new opportunity for the family unit to experience life abroad. 

Some digital nomad visas can lead to permanent residency after you live in the country for a certain period. Eventually, this can lead to citizenship. 

What Is the Azerbaijan Digital Nomad Visa?

The Azerbaijan digital nomad visa is a proposed category that will allow foreign remote professionals to live in the country while earning income from abroad. 

Also described as a “digital traveler” visa, the program was included in Azerbaijan’s 2026-2030 State Program for Tourism Development. It’s intended to create a dedicated immigration route for remote workers rather than requiring them to rely on short-term tourist visas. 

The Azerbaijan digital nomad visa is part of a wider strategy to attract international professionals and develop the country’s digital economy. This strategy also includes plans for a separate Digital Talent Visa and potential tax, residency, and social insurance incentives. 

When Will the Azerbaijan Digital Nomad Visa Launch?

The Azerbaijan digital nomad visa is expected to launch electronically sometime in 2027 or 2028. However, the government has not announced an exact date for when applications will open. 

Remote workers cannot currently apply for the Azerbaijan digital nomad visa. Details about its application process, processing time, cost, and required documents will likely be released closer to the launch.

Azerbaijan Digital Nomad Visa Eligibility Requirements

Azerbaijan has not yet published the official eligibility requirements for its digital nomad visa. However, based on other digital nomad visa programs, we can assume applicants will need to meet the following:

• Valid Passport – Have a valid passport at the time of submitting your application
• Proof of Remote Work – Work remotely as an employee, freelancer, or business owner for clients or companies located outside of Azerbaijan
• Minimum Income – You will likely have to earn a certain amount every month
• International Health Insurance – You will likely need a comprehensive health insurance policy with coverage in Azerbaijan
• Clean Criminal Record – You may have to submit a certified background check from your country of residence

Azerbaijan Digital Nomad Visa Tax Implications

One of the main concerns for remote workers considering applying for a digital nomad visa is whether they will owe local income tax. 

Azerbaijan has discussed introducing special tax, currency, residency, and social insurance measures alongside its digital nomad and digital talent visa programs. However, the government has not finalized or published the tax rules that will apply to visa holders. 

Therefore, it is unknown whether digital nomads will receive an exemption on foreign-earned income or qualify for a reduced tax rate. 

How to Visit Azerbaijan Now

Digital nomads who do not want to wait for the new visa may still visit Azerbaijan using the country’s existing entry options. Depending on your nationality, you may qualify for visa-free entry, a visa on arrival, an electronic visa, or a traditional visa from an Azerbaijan embassy or consulate.

Apply for the Azerbaijan ASAN eVisa

Citizens of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many European, Asian, and Latin American countries may apply through the official ASAN Visa portal. 

The ASAN eVisa is a single-entry visa that allows you to stay in Azerbaijan for up to 30 days. Standard applications are processed within three working days, while urgent applications can be processed within three hours. 

The government charges a $20 USD visa fee and a $9 USD service fee. Your passport must remain valid for at least three months after the eVisa expires. 

Visa-Free Countries for Azerbaijan

Ordinary passport holders from the following countries can currently enter Azerbaijan without applying for a visa or eVisa.

Visa-free visitors can generally stay in Azerbaijan for up to 90 days. However, Qatar citizens may stay for up to 30 days. Chinese citizens may stay for 30 days per entry, with their total time in Azerbaijan limited to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Temporary Visa-Free Arrangements

Azerbaijan also introduced temporary visa exemptions for several additional nationalities:

• Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia: Up to three visa-free entries between February 15, 2026, and February 15, 2027, with each stay limited to 30 days. 
• Japan and South Korea: Up to three visa-free entries between July 1, 2026, and July 1, 2027, with each stay limited to 30 days. 
• Bosnia and Herzegovina and Singapore: Up to three visa-free entries between August 1, 2026, and August 1, 2027, with each stay limited to 30 days.
• Hong Kong and Macao passport holders: Up to three visa-free entries between February 2, 2026, and February 2, 2027, with each stay limited to 30 days. 

Future Changes to Azerbaijan’s eVisa System

Azerbaijan also plans to expand the number of nationalities eligible for an eVisa and improve access to multiple-entry electronic visas. However, the future visa’s validity, fees, permitted stay, and eligible nationalities have not been announced. 

For now, travelers should follow the existing entry rules and check the official ASAN visa portal for updates before applying. 

Azerbaijan for Digital Nomads

Azerbaijan could become an exciting destination for digital nomads seeking an affordable and less familiar base between Europe and Asia. 

Baku will likely be the main hub for remote workers. The capital offers modern infrastructure, coworking spaces, cafes, restaurants, public transportation, and international flight connections. The city combines modern architecture with centuries of history. Digital nomads can work near the Caspian Sea, explore the UNESCO-listed Old City after logging off, and enjoy traditional cuisine without the higher costs associated with many nomad hotspots. 

There is also plenty to discover beyond Baku. You can visit the ancient petroglyphs and mud volcanoes of Gobustan, admire the traditional architecture of Sheki, or spend a weekend hiking and skiing in the Caucasus Mountains. Gabala, Ganja, and Nakchivan offer even more opportunities to experience the country’s landscapes and cultural heritage. 

Azerbaijan might not have the large international nomad communities found in destinations like Portugal or Thailand. However, its developing digital infrastructure, distinctive culture, and planned digital nomad visa could help it become an emerging hub for adventurous nomads.
