Nepal Digital Nomad Visa: 5-Year Stay Proposed
A new digital nomad visa is on the horizon in South Asia. With a newly proposed Nepal digital nomad visa, remote workers and their family members could live in the country for up to five years.
As proposed by the High-Level Economic Committee, Nepal is preparing to officially welcome digital nomads to live in the country and work remotely in hopes of boosting tourism and economic growth.
Following the guidelines set by Thailand’s Destination Thailand Visa, the country is considering providing a visa valid for five years, allowing applicants to obtain a one-year renewable residence permit.
As of now, the Committee is considering implementing a 5% flat tax on digital nomad income if the remote workers stay in Nepal for 183 days out of the year.
We will update this article with more information as it is released.
What is a Digital Nomad Visa?
With more than 50 countries offering digital nomad visas, these short-term residencies allow remote workers (and often their family members) to live in a foreign country temporarily.
These visas are specifically for remote workers who are employed by, own, or contracted by clients or companies established outside of the country where they wish to live.
In other words, digital nomad visa holders are prohibited from engaging in local business activity in the country where they live.
In some cases, digital nomad visas can lead to permanent residency and even citizenship, but these are a select few.
Nepal Digital Nomad Visa Eligibility Requirements
While the official eligibility requirements for the Nepal digital nomad visa have not been released, the Committee has proposed the following:
- Work Remotely – Applicants must work remotely as an employee, freelancer, or business owner for entities established outside of Nepal
- Earn $1,500 per month OR Hold $20,000 in the Bank – Applicants must either meet the monthly income requirement or show they have a bank balance
- International Health Insurance with $100,000 Coverage – You must have valid health insurance in Nepal meeting the coverage requirement
This is all we know at this time, but we can assume that applicants must also have a clean criminal record to qualify.
