Available Digital Nomad Visas in Europe

It’s just within the last few years that European countries have started to officially invite digital nomads to come and live in their nations, experience the culture, and work remotely from stunning landscapes. 

Many of these digital nomad visas last from six months up to two years. Some even dismiss you from paying local taxes while residing in the country. Below are the current digital nomad visas available in Europe.

Croatia

The Croatia digital nomad visa was introduced in January 2021 and has become one of the most popular in the area. With excellent wifi, gorgeous Mediterranean beaches, and plenty of activities to keep digital nomads busy, Croatia is quickly becoming a trendy hotspot. 

You may apply for Croatia’s digital nomad visa either at a consulate office or while in the country too. This is especially convenient for digital nomads who fall in love with Croatia and decide they would like to stay. 

Visa Term: 1 year (nonrenewable)

Visa Requirements:

  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Remote Work
  • Income of at least €2,870 per month or €34,444 in savings
  • Proof of Health Insurance
  • Criminal Background Check
  • Address of Accommodations in Croatia

Cyprus

The Cyprus digital nomad visa was introduced in early 2022. This visa is a great opportunity for remote workers looking to stay on a beautiful Mediterranean island with a mild climate during the winter months.

Known for its favorable tax rates and business opportunities, Cyprus is an excellent choice for entrepreneurs. However, the digital nomad visa is very exclusive, as only 500 are granted throughout the year. Visa holders must also spend at least 60 days in Cyprus during their visa term.

Applicants can include spouses and dependents on their applications.

Visa Term: 1 year

Visa Requirements:

  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Remote Work
  • Income of at least 3,500€/month (individual)
    • Earn 4,200€/month (couples)

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic now offers an official digital nomad visa to IT and STEM remote workers and freelancers.

Previously, digital nomads applied for the Czech Republic freelance visa, which was a bit complicated and required registering a business in the country.

The Czech Republic digital nomad visa is easier to apply for, but does have some strict eligibility requirements. 

To apply for the visa, you must make an appointment at a Czech embassy or consulate.

Estonia

Estonia was the very first European country to offer a digital nomad visa. This follows their e-residency program, which allows entrepreneurs and freelancers to open digital businesses in Estonia. 

This fairytale-like country is digitally advanced and a thriving hub for traveling remote workers. To apply for the visa, you must make an appointment at an Estonian embassy or consulate. 

The great news is that your application is processed in just 30 days, which is fairly quick.

Greece

What if you could live on a sunny, white Greek island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea and work from your laptop? This dream can soon become a reality with Greece’s digital nomad visa! 

With the affordable cost of living, rich history, and amazing cuisine, digital nomads are looking forward to making Greece their new home for a little while. 

To apply, you will have to schedule an appointment at your nearest Greek consulate. Applicants will receive an answer about whether their visa is approved within 10 days of submitting their documents.

This is also one of the few Europe digital nomad visas that lead to permanent residency.

Hungary

With Hungary’s digital nomad residency program, also known as the White Card, you can live and work remotely within the country for one year with the option to renew. Budapest has long been a popular destination amongst digital nomads, mostly for its reliable infrastructure, great wifi, and affordable prices.

It’s important to note that family unification is not considered in this residency, so each family member must apply on their own.

You may apply for this Europe digital nomad visa online if you do not require an entry visa into Hungary or at the nearest Hungarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.

Iceland

Unlike other digital nomads visas in Europe, you must actually be in Iceland to receive the visa. However, you may mail your application to the necessary offices before arriving in the country. Once in Iceland, you can pick up the approved visa. 

You’ll experience Iceland’s stunning nature, hot lagoons, and volcanoes like a local and truly enjoy everything this amazing country has to offer.

Italy

The beautiful country of Italy announced that they are accepting digital nomad visa applications in April 2024. With iconic cities such as Milan, Rome, and Venice, Italy has long been a favorite travel destination for both vacationers and digital nomads alike.

You can count on eating well, meeting friendly people, and receiving quite a few history and cultural lessons during your stay in Italy. We don’t know much about the visa, but we do know that there will be unlimited visas available each year, unlike other Italian visas that cap the number of acceptances.

Visa Term: 1 year (renewable)

Visa Requirements:

  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Remote Work as a highly skilled professional
  • Earn 2,333€ per month
  • Health Insurance
  • Clean Criminal Record from the last five years
  • Accommodations in Italy

Latvia

Latvia introduced a draft of their digital nomad visa law earlier in February of this year. Located in northern Europe along the Baltic Sea, Latvia is a fairytale land come to life.

Digital nomads will quickly appreciate the quick wifi speeds and the gorgeous backdrop of colorful buildings and unique architecture. With a growing community of remote workers, digital nomads will soon feel right at home.

Latvia is also part of the Schengen Area, which means digital nomads who hold this visa can travel within the bloc visa-free during their time in Latvia.

Visa Term: 1 year + option to renew

Visa Requirements:

  • Work for a company established in an OECD country

Malta

The small beautiful island of Malta is truly a hidden gem in Europe that has long attracted digital nomads to its crystal blue waters and unique culture. 

The country introduced its Residency Malta program in the summer of 2021 and has seen a lot of success with it. With excellent wifi networks, coworking spaces popping up around the island, and a thriving digital nomad community, it’s a great escape from the rest of the world.

Norway

If you don’t mind the cold or darkness in the winter, Norway could be the perfect destination for your digital nomad adventure. 

With some of the friendliest people in the world, you can call Norway home thanks to their digital nomad visa. However, the requirements are quite similar to another country we’ve read about already. To apply for Norway’s digital nomad visa, you must be a freelancer contracted to work by a Norwegian company. 

Some of your clients may be outside of Norway, but you must have one client in Norway. They also must pay you above the minimum wage. 

Visa Term: 2 years

Visa Requirements:

  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Business Establishment Abroad
  • Contract with Norwegian Client
  • Annual Income of at least 35,719€ (before tax)

Portugal

One of the busiest digital nomad hotspots in Europe is Portugal. You’ll often find remote workers sitting on their laptops in cafes and coworking spaces in Lisbon and Porto. 

This gorgeous country offers everything you could ask for; sun, beaches, great food, and amazing cultural traditions. It’s also an exceptionally affordable place to live, considering its location.

Romania has been attracting digital nomads for years. Spain

People are getting very excited about the possibility of living and working remotely in the beautiful country of Spain. Sip on a glass of sangria while tasting a plethora of tapas as you earn a remote income – your life can’t get better than this. 

Spain’s government is insistent on attracting new entrepreneurs and startups, so it’s the perfect opportunity to network with like-minded people and see where your business goes. There is also a tax break for digital nomads!

You can apply for the visa either as a tourist already in Spain or from a consulate or embassy in your country of residence.

The Spain digital nomad visa lasts for one year. During this time, visa holders can apply for a three-year residence permit. After five years of legally living in Spain, you may apply for permanent residency.

How to Apply for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa

Türkiye

Formerly known as Turkey, this Euro-Asian country is officially welcoming digital nomads from select countries to explore areas like Antalya, Bodrum, and Fethiye for an extended period. While the eligibility requirements are highly selective, this offers a great opportunity for remote workers to explore a digital nomad hotspot.

The application process is partly done online and at a Turkish consulate or visa center abroad. You will obtain a Digital Nomad Identity Certificate through the official website and use it to make a visa appointment with the necessary authorities.

Visa Term: TBA

Visa Requirements:

  • Valid Passport from EU, USA, UK, Canada, Russia, or Belarus
  • Age Between 21 and 55
  • Work Remotely
  • Earn at least $3,000 per month
  • Hold a University Degree or Diploma

Montenegro

Montenegro is located in the Balkans, just south of Croatia. It’s a small country that has a ton of amazing views and little Medieval towns for you to experience during your stay here. 

It’s a great destination for digital nomads who enjoy a quiet and tranquil place where they can focus on their work. You can also visit one of the many (over 150 to be exact) beaches that Montenegro has to offer during your downtime.
