As one of the top destinations for digital nomads looking for a strong wifi connection, a large remote worker community, and high quality of life, digital nomad visas in Europe are some of the most popular today.

However, one of the drawbacks of digital nomad visas from this region is the high-income requirements. For digital nomads who are just starting on their journeys or have ventured into a new business, this can feel discouraging.

To better help you make your move to some of the most beautiful countries in the world, we’ve put together a list of the cheapest digital nomad visas in Europe.

The digital nomad visas on this list require applicants to make less than 3,000€ per month working remotely.

While this amount is still higher than other digital nomad visa income requirements, such as digital nomad visas in South America, it’s the necessary amount you’ll need to live a comfortable life in the country.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

Before we jump into the cheapest digital nomad visas in Europe, let’s first discuss what a digital nomad visa is.

Digital nomad visas are temporary residence permits that allow remote workers to live in a country. Usually, the term is one year and is often renewable.

Some of these digital nomad visas can lead to permanent residency, which is ideal for remote workers looking to relocate and set up a new life for themselves abroad.

A digital nomad visa does not allow you to partake in local economic business activity.

In other words, you cannot seek employment in the country. This is why digital nomad visas have an income requirement; to ensure you can support yourself without working locally.

Why Do Digital Nomad Visas in Europe Have Income Requirements?

The income requirement of a digital nomad visa is often the determining factor of whether you are eligible to apply for it or not.

It can be frustrating, especially if your salary isn’t stable or you have just started a new job. But there is a good reason why countries set an income requirement for their digital nomad visas.

Countries often determine the income requirement by multiplying the country’s minimum wage by two or three. This is strictly to ensure that digital nomad visa applicants can support their lifestyles in the country without relying on the country’s resources, which are reserved for its citizens.

When applying for a digital nomad visa, it’s important that you can prove your income on your application through bank statements and payslips too.

Do You Have to Pay Tax When You Have a Digital Nomad Visa?

Where do digital nomads pay taxes? This is one of the most complicated questions when it comes to digital nomad visas worldwide.

The answer isn’t as straightforward as you may like, either.

The general rule of thumb is that if you spend more than 183 days in a country, then you are legally a tax resident. This means you will owe local taxes.

However, some countries have enacted certain schemes for digital nomad visa holders that do not require them to pay local taxes. Greece, for example, is one of those countries.

When considering which digital nomad visa to apply for in Europe, it’s important to speak with a professional immigration lawyer or accountant to learn more about your specific situation as a taxpayer.

There are some digital nomad visas with no tax liability, but most are outside of Europe.
