What is a Digital Nomad Visa?
A digital nomad visa allows remote workers to live in a foreign country for an extended time period.
They are temporary residence permits that typically last longer than a normal tourist visa. Digital nomad visa applicants can also take advantage of the same benefits as residents, such as the healthcare and education system.
Digital nomad visas are ideal for remote workers who want to settle down in a foreign country temporarily without worrying about overstaying a tourist visa. They can experience the lifestyle and call it home for a little while.
Available Digital Nomad Visas in Africa
There are currently three countries offering digital nomad visas in Africa. They all offer their own benefits and have a relatively simple application process done right online.
Digital nomads are jumping at the opportunity to explore a new part of the world that is uncommon for remote workers at the moment. With these Africa digital nomad visas, they can experience a unique, once-in-a-lifetime lifestyle.
Cape Verde
Made up of ten islands, Cape Verde is an archipelago located off the west coast of Africa. Each island has a different vibe and atmosphere.
Many digital nomads choose to stay on the islands of Sal and Santiago. You’ll find extremely friendly people, beautiful beaches, and delicious food on the Cape Verde islands.
The Cape Verde digital nomad visa also does not require you to work remotely. You simply have to prove you have sustained a bank balance of 1,500€ for the last six months.
The online application process is extremely simple. When you arrive in Cape Verde, you will pick up your digital nomad visa right at border control.
To be eligible for Cape Verde’s digital nomad visa, you must be a citizen of Europe, North America, Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), or Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO).

Mauritius
Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is a lush green island ready to welcome digital nomads with its digital nomad visa.
Digital nomads can find peace, tranquility, and great productivity while living in Mauritius. With easy digital nomad visa requirements and application process, remote workers are taking advantage of this Africa digital nomad visa.
Many digital nomads choose to set up their base in Port Louis, the main city on the island. However, they spend their days exploring the small island and relaxing on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world when they’ve finished their work.

Namibia
If you have ever dreamed of going on safari while working remotely in one of the most uniquely beautiful countries in the world, then Namibia’s digital nomad visa may be the thing for you.
Released in October of 2022, digital nomads can live in Namibia for up to six months with the digital nomad visa. They’ll have the change to explore the thriving cities, play in the sand dunes, and experience the exotic wildlife in the country.
English is the official language of Namibia, making it easy for digital nomads to navigate their way through the country. However, you can also expect to hear Afrikaans and Oshiwambo spoken by the locals.
The entire visa application process is done online. You’ll receive an answer of approval via email.

Africa Digital Nomad Visas Coming Soon
With so many great countries in Africa for digital nomads, we are anxiously awaiting for more to introduce digital nomad visas.
The information in this section is simply what we know about announced digital nomad visas. The details could change based on the government’s decisions and approval of the legislation.
Kenya
In October of 2024, the President announced plans to launch a Kenya digital nomad visa during the Magical Kenya Travel Expo. Officially known as the Digital Nomad Work Permit, it will allow remote workers earning at least $55,000 USD per year to come and live in Kenya temporarily.
At this time, we do not have information about how long the visa will be valid for and if it is renewable or not. We will update this post as more information is released.
Kenya is famous for its marvelous safaris and experiences. While many digital nomads will likely stick to the capital city of Nairobi or the coastal towns, Kenya has plenty of once-in-a-lifetime experiences for remote workers.

South Africa
In the spring of 2022, South Africa announced plans to introduce a digital nomad visa.
So far, we know that the visa term will be for one year. There are also rumors of giving digital nomads with the visa tax breaks while living in the country. Although, we are still waiting for more details about this.
Many digital nomads choose to work remotely from Cape Town or Johannesburg, as these are the two major cities in South Africa. Of course, they also venture out to see the nature, including penguins on the beach and hiking intense mountains.
