Remote workers and their family members can now live in Europe for up to one year with the newly launched Slovenia digital nomad visa.

The Slovenia digital nomad visa is non-renewable. However, remote workers may reapply six months from the expiration date of their previous digital nomad visa.

There will be multiple ways to submit the Slovenia digital nomad visa application. These include applying in the country as a tourist or at a Slovenian embassy or consulate.

Slovenia is the latest country in Europe to join in the official welcoming of digital nomads to spend an extended period. It joins popular destinations such as Spain, Portugal, Greece, Malta, and Hungary

Nomads Embassy will update this article as more information is released about the Slovenia digital nomad visa.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

Digital nomad visas allow remote workers (and sometimes their family members) to temporarily live abroad.

With more than 50 countries offering digital nomad visas, they have become a unique opportunity for location-independent workers to experience a new culture and life abroad. Some of these digital nomad visas can even lead to permanent residency and eventually citizenship

It’s important to understand that a digital nomad visa does not allow the main applicant to participate in the local business economy. This means they cannot apply for local jobs. In some cases, family members are allowed to work and study while living there.

To be eligible, the main applicant must work either as an employee, freelancer, or business owner of entities established outside of the country in which they wish to apply for a digital nomad visa.

Slovenia Digital Nomad Visa Eligibility Requirements

At this time, the official eligibility requirements for Slovenia’s digital nomad visa have not be released. However, we can assume that applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Valid Passport – You must have a valid non-EU/EEA passport
  • Work Remotely – You must work remotely as an employee, freelancer, or business owner for entities established outside of Slovenia
  • Earn at least 3,200€ per month– The income requirement is 2x the national average net monthly salary
  • Clean Criminal Record – Most digital nomad visas require applicants to present a clean criminal background check
  • International Health Insurance – You will likely need an international health insurance policy for the duration of your stay in Slovenia

We will update these eligibility requirements as they are announced.

How to Apply for Slovenia’s Digital Nomad Visa

While the official application process for the Slovenia digital nomad visa still needs to be announced, we know that there will be three methods to submit your application.

  1. Applicants may visit Slovenia as tourists and submit their application at any Administrative Unit
  2. Applicants may visit a Slovenian consulate or embassy in their country of legal residence to submit their applications

Step 1: Gather Necessary Documents

Whether you decide to apply as a tourist in Slovenia or at a consulate abroad, you must have all of the necessary documentation.

It’s important to note that each consulate post and even an Administrative Unit may require additional documents beyond the general list provided below. Always check with the entity where you plan to submit your application before attending your appointment.

  • Copy of Passport
  • Proof of Remote Work
  • Previous Bank Statements (most countries request 3, 6, or even 12 months)
  • Certified Criminal Background Check
  • Proof of International Health Insurance with coverage in Slovenia
  • Address of Accommodations in Slovenia
  • Completed Visa Application (coming soon!)

Step 2: Attend Visa Appointment

When you attend your visa appointment, make sure to bring all the original and copies of the requested documents.

There may be a visa interview, depending on where you decide to submit your Slovenia digital nomad visa application. You can also expect to pay a visa application and/or administrative fee. The cost may vary depending on your location.

Step 3: Wait for Approval

We are unaware of how long it will take for the authorities to review and approve the Slovenia digital nomad visa applications. This article will be updated once we have more information.

Step 4: Receive Your Temporary Residence Permit

Once approved, you will be granted a one-year temporary residence permit allowing you and your family members to stay in Slovenia.

When the residence permit expires, you must leave the country and wait at least 6 months before reapplying.

If, during your time in Slovenia, you find another residency path that you may qualify for, then you may convert your residence permit and extend your stay.
