Hungary Digital Nomad Visa Facts You Should Know Before Applying
As you begin to research Hungary’s digital nomad visa and prepare your application, here are some things you should know.
1. You Cannot Bring a Spouse or Dependents
Hungary’s digital nomad visa only accepts single applicants.
This means applicants may not include a spouse or dependents on their application. For applicants who are married, their spouse must submit a separate digital nomad visa application and also meet the requirements.
2. Processing Time Takes About 30 Days
Hungary has one of the fastest digital nomad visa processing times in Europe. In just 30 days, you can receive an answer about your application.
This processing time applies to whether you submit your application online, in Hungary, or at an embassy or consulate.
3. You Can Apply Online, in Hungary, or at an Embassy or Consulate
There are three methods to apply for Hungary’s digital nomad visa.
- Online
- In Hungary
- At an Embassy or Consulate
The first two options are available for applicants holding passports that do not require an entry visa into Hungary or the Schengen Area.
However, if your passport requires an entry visa, then you must submit your digital nomad visa application at a Hungarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.
4. You Must Have a 12-Month Lease or Deed for Accommodations
One of the requirements when applying for Hungary’s digital nomad visa is to have a place to stay for the duration of your visa.
This means you must submit a lease agreement that is valid for at least 12 months or have proof of ownership of a property in Hungary.
Most applicants will have to find a year-long lease in order to apply. While this may be one of the more challenging aspects of the visa, Nomads Embassy has partnered with accommodations platforms Flatio and Spotahome to help you find the perfect apartment and lease agreement for your stay in Hungary.
5. Documents May Be Submitted in English
One of the most important parts of applying for a digital nomad visa is gathering and preparing your documents. One of the great things about applying for Hungary’s digital nomad visa is that you can submit documents in either English or Hungarian.
6. The Visa is Renewable for a Total of Two Years
Hungary’s digital nomad visa is initially valid for one year, with the opportunity to renew it for a second year.
However, after the second year, you must leave Hungary.
There is no official statement about whether you can reapply for the visa after it has expired.
7. You Must Show Six Months of Bank Statements
One of the main determining factors when it comes to eligibility is your income. You must earn at least 3,000€ (or the currency equivalent) per month. This amount is after taxes.
To prove that you meet the minimum income requirement, you must submit at least six months’ worth of bank statements showing that you have earned this amount.
8. Does Not Lead to Permanent Residency
Unlike other digital nomad visas in Europe that lead to permanent residency, Hungary’s digital nomad visa does not. After two years of living in Hungary with the digital nomad visa, you must either leave or convert it to another type of visa.
However, the two years that you spent in Hungary with the digital nomad visa will not count towards permanent residency if you convert your visa or residence permit.
