We’ve talked about digital nomad visas for families who want to move abroad, but what about digital nomad visas for unmarried couples? Can applicants include their unmarried partners as dependents on their digital nomad visa applications?

The answer is yes! But only a select few digital nomad visas allow unmarried couples to apply together.

We get it; sometimes getting legally married isn’t in the cards for some couples or it’s just not the right time. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to live out your dreams of living abroad and working remotely!

So, to help you narrow down your options, we’re diving into digital nomad visas for unmarried couples.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

If this is your first time visiting Nomads Embassy, then you may not fully understand what a digital nomad visa is. There are more than 50 digital nomad visas available right now!

Digital nomad visas are temporary visas or residence permits that allow remote workers, and sometimes their family members, to move abroad. These visas are usually valid from six months to one year and are renewable in some cases. Some digital nomad visas even lead to permanent residency or citizenship

It’s important to note that applicants may not seek local employment or conduct business locally when they hold a digital nomad visa.

Can You Apply for a Digital Nomad Visa with an Unmarried Partner?

There are some digital nomad visas that allow you to apply with an unmarried partner as a dependent. Now, it is not the case for every digital nomad visa. In fact, some digital nomad visas don’t even allow family members, like Hungary and Panama

When searching for the right digital nomad visa for your situation, it’s essential to understand which visas allow unmarried couples to apply together and what documentation you need to show.

How to Prove Your Relationship When Applying for a Digital Nomad Visa as an Unmarried Couple

Even if you were to apply with your legally married spouse, you must submit proof of your relationship. The same goes for when you apply for digital nomad visas as an unmarried couple. However, the documents are not as standardized and you may need to submit multiple documents to prove your relationship.

Some of the accepted documents to prove the relationship of an unmarried couple include:

  • Joint bank accounts
  • Joint tax returns
  • Residential lease
  • Property deed
  • Civil relationship status

If you plan to apply for a digital nomad visa as an unmarried couple, we highly recommend working with an immigration lawyer to assist in your application preparation. They can provide legal guidance about which documents you must present to prove your relationship.

Croatia 🇭🇷

In 2024, Croatia began to allow common law and unmarried partners to apply for the digital nomad visa together.

With Croatia’s digital nomad visa, you and your partner can live in the country for up to 12 months tax-free. It’s important to note that the visa is non-renewable. You may reapply after exiting the country for at least six months after the expiration of your first visa.

To be eligible for the Croatia digital nomad visa as a couple, the main applicant must earn at least 3,157€ per month or show at least 34,440€ in savings over the last 12 months.

Couples must also prove that they have been in a stable relationship for at least three years before applying.

However, unmarried couples who have a child together can show that they have been together for less than three years.

You can apply for the Greece digital nomad visa at a Greek consulate in your country of residence or you can enter Greece as a tourist and apply directly for a two-year residence permit under the digital nomad visa law.
