Portugal Digital Nomad Visa Updates for 2026

Below are the three major changes to Portugal’s digital nomad visa in 2026. Before you begin the visa application process, make sure to read over the new eligibility requirements and citizenship rules.

Increased Income Requirement

Each year, Portugal’s income requirement increases. This is because it is directly tied to the national minimum wage, which also increases each year.

This year, the monthly income requirement has increased by 200€ for individual applicants, increasing it from 3,480€ to 3,680€ per month.

The major change is the increase in income when you decide to bring dependents. You can see the new income requirements below.

ApplicantsMonthly Income Required Per Applicant
Individual3,680€
Dependent Adult1,840€
Dependent Child1,104€

So, for a couple applying for Portugal’s digital nomad visa, the main applicant must show a monthly income of 5,520€.

A family of three would require the main applicant to earn at least 6,624€ per month.

Below is a table outlining the income requirements for various familial situations.

ApplicantsMonthly Income Required
Individual3,680€
Couples5,520€
Family of 3 (Dependent Adult & Child)6,624€
Family of 4 (Dependent Adult & Children)7,728€
Family of 5 (Dependent Adult & Children)8,832€

Savings Requirement in Addition to Monthly Income

Previously, some consulates accepted savings to cover the cost of adding a dependent family member. With the Portugal digital nomad visa updates for 2026, savings will now be required of all applicants, including individuals and those bringing dependents.

Below you will find the individual savings required for each type of applicant:

ApplicantsSavings Requirement
Individual11,040€
Dependent Adult5,520€
Dependent Child2,208€

Using the individual savings requirement as the base, you can add the required amount per dependent you plan to bring.

Below is a quick reference table to see how much you’ll need in savings, along with the monthly income required.

ApplicantsMonthly Income RequiredSavings Required
Individual3,680€11,040€
Couples5,520€16,560€
Family of 3 (Dependent Adult & Child)6,624€18,768€
Family of 4 (Dependent Adult & Children)7,728€20,976€
Family of 5 (Dependent Adult & Children)8,832€23,184€

Important: You may not qualify for Portugal’s digital nomad visa based solely on savings. It must be met in addition to your actively earned monthly income.

Prolonged Path to Citizenship

One of the main attractions of Portugal’s digital nomad visa was the 5-year path to citizenship. However, as of October 2025, the government voted to extend the path to citizenship to 10 years, plus processing times.

However, citizens of certain Portuguese-speaking CPLP countries will have an expedited 7-year path to citizenship.

The path to permanent residency is still 5 years.
