Important Portugal Digital Nomad Visa Updates 2025
Are you planning to apply for the Portugal digital nomad visa? Then, you’re going to want to learn about the new eligibility and application process for the Portugal digital nomad visa updates in 2025.
With each new year, many governments review the eligibility requirements and application processes of the digital nomad visas they offer and update them to meet the country’s current economic status and immigration practices. Portugal is one of them.
We’re exploring the Portugal digital nomad visa updates in 2025 and how they affect applicants who plan to move there this year.
Portugal Digital Nomad Visa Updates 2025
There are three important changes to the Portugal digital nomad visa in 2025.
Increased Minimum Income Requirement
The income requirement for Portugal’s digital nomad visa is directly tied to the nation’s minimum wage, which tends to increase yearly.
To qualify for Portugal’s digital nomad visa, you must earn 4x the national minimum wage, which, as of 2025, is 870€ per month.
So, remote workers must meet the following income requirements to qualify for Portugal’s digital nomad visa in 2025:
It’s also important to remember that this monthly income requirement is after tax.
You will be asked to present three to six months of bank statements and payslips to prove that you meet the income requirement. The exact number of months is determined by the Portuguese consulate or VFS office accepting the visa application.
NISS (Social Security Number) Requested
After receiving approval of your Portugal digital nomad visa, you may apply for a two-year residence permit within four months of entering the country.
When you go to the AIMA office to request your residence permit, you may be asked to present your NISS or Portuguese social security number. While this is not an official requirement, we are seeing more AIMA offices request it recently.
You can apply for your NISS online through the official Portugal social security platform.
It’s important to note that this is different from your NIF, which is your tax ID number and is also necessary when applying for your residence permit.
Limited Visa Appointments in Certain Countries
Over the last year, we have seen it become increasingly difficult to obtain appointments at a Portuguese consulate or VFS office for the digital nomad visa in the following countries:
- Nigeria 🇳🇬
- Pakistan 🇵🇰
- Bangladesh 🇧🇩
- UAE 🇦🇪
- India 🇮🇳
- Türkiye 🇹🇷
- Iran 🇮🇷
- Afghanistan 🇦🇫
- Other surrounding countries 🌍
There are ways around this that an immigration lawyer can assist with, but it can delay the digital nomad visa application process by a few months.
If you currently reside in one of these countries, it’s important to be aware of this difficulty and plan your timeline and expectations accordingly.
