What is the Panama Digital Nomad Visa?

The Panama digital nomad visa allows remote workers to live in the country for up to 18 months in total. The initial visa is valid for nine months and is then renewable once.

It’s important to note that the Panama digital nomad visa does not allow family inclusion. So, only individual applicants may apply.

There is one caveat to applying for Panama’s digital nomad visa—you must apply with an immigration lawyer. It is not possible to submit your application or the Panama digital nomad visa documents on your own.

(Don’t worry; we’re here to help with that!)

Another important fact to mention is that when you live in Panama for more than 183 days, then you will also become a tax resident. However, Panama is known for its favorable tax rates, and it could actually be a benefit of the visa in certain situations!

To be eligible for Panama’s digital nomad visa, you must meet the following criteria:

If you meet the above requirements and you plan to apply as an individual (no family members included), then you can proceed with applying for the Panama digital nomad visa!

Required Panama Digital Nomad Visa Documents

Below is a general list of documents you will need to submit when applying for the Panama digital nomad visa.

🛂 Copy of Passport

You will need to present a copy of your valid passport. This will be a complete copy of the passport, including the biometrics page, stamped pages, and empty pages.

📸 5 Passport-Size Photos

You must submit five passport-size photos (35 mm x 45 mm). The photo should have a white background. There should not be a glossy finish on the printed photo.

📄 Proof of Foreign Company Existence

To prove that your employer or your own company is established outside of Panama, you must present official business establishment or registration documents to prove this.

This will be a document of incorporation from the country where the business is established.

💻 Remote Work Contract

As an employee, you must submit a Job Letter or remote work contract. It will need to be signed by a legal representative of the company and be printed on company letterhead with the logo.

This contract should include the following information:

  • Your name
  • Your position and performed tasks
  • Stated monthly income of at least $3,000 per month (or its equivalent)
  • Specific indication that you work remotely
  • A commitment to assume the expenses of repatriation

You will have to speak with your company to amend your current work contract to include this information.

If you are a self-employed individual, then you must provide a document stating:

  • Where payments come from
  • List of your clients
  • Services you provide
  • Regularity of payment
  • Number of payments received monthly

🤑 Proof of Income

There are two ways you can prove your income.

Two months of bank statements from a foreign bank with a bank stamp to prove funds are received as part of your remote job

Bank Certification letter stating that your income is received from abroad

✍️ Signed Declaration

You must sign an official declaration that you will not accept job offers or provide services while you are in Panama with the digital nomad visa.

When you work with an immigration lawyer, they will create the declaration for you to sign.

🩺 Good Health Certificate

You must submit a certificate of good health showing that you do not have serious illnesses. Your immigration lawyer will request the certificate, and you may need your doctor to sign off on it.

🏥 International Health Insurance Policy

While in Panama, you must have an international health insurance policy that offers coverage for the duration of your stay.

We recommend Genki and Safetywing for comprehensive digital nomad insurance.

🚔 Criminal Background Check

You are required to submit a criminal background check from your country of residence. It must not be more than six months old.

If you’re a resident of the United States, check out our article about how to get a criminal background check.

What Panama Digital Nomad Visa Documents Require an Apostille or Legalization?

This is where Panama’s digital nomad visa application process differs from others. When it comes to gathering your documents, almost all of them will need to have an Apostille or be legalized by a Panama Consulate in the country where the documents originated.

So, which documents require an apostille or legalization?

  •  Proof of Foreign Company Existence
  • Self-Employed Declaration of Remote Work
  • Bank Certification Letter and Bank Statements
  • International Health Insurance Policy
  • Criminal Background Check

It’s important to account for the time it takes to send your documents for an apostille or certification, as it can take a couple of weeks, depending on how you decide to handle it.
