Malta has one of the most popular digital nomad visas in the world—and for good reason! With an online application process and a minimal 300€ application fee, remote workers and their family members can live in Malta for up to four years. But before submitting your application, you must verify that you meet the Malta digital nomad visa requirements.

Not just anyone can apply for Malta’s digital nomad visa.

There are a set of eligibility requirements that main applicants must meet to move to the country.

To help you determine your eligibility, we’re diving into the Malta digital nomad visa requirements (with some firsthand tips) so you can make the decision of where you want to go next with your digital nomad lifestyle

What is the Malta Digital Nomad Visa?

The Malta digital nomad visa is officially referred to as the Nomad Residence Permit. It was launched in 2021 by the Residency Malta Agency and has since accepted hundreds of applications.

With this digital nomad visa, applicants and their immediate family members may live in Malta for up to four years, provided they continue to meet the Malta digital nomad visa requirements upon renewal each year.

It’s important to note that Malta’s digital nomad visa does not allow applicants or their family members to work locally. However, children may attend local schools.

It also does not lead to permanent residency. If you are interested in living in Malta more than four years, you may want to consider the Malta Permanent Residency Programme

Malta Digital Nomad Visa Requirements: Are You Eligible?

One of the most important parts of applying for a digital nomad visa (and avoiding rejection) is verifying your eligibility.

You can do this for free by requesting Nomads Embassy’s free eligibility assessment by completing the form in this blog post.

Of course, we’re diving into the Malta digital nomad visa requirements below too!

Valid Passport

Your passport must be issued by one of the eligible countries for the Malta digital nomad visa.

Prohibited nationalities include:

  • EU nations 🇪🇺
  • EEA nations
  • Switzerland 🇨🇭
  • Afghanistan 🇦🇫
  • North Korea 🇰🇵
  • Iran 🇮🇷
  • Democratic Republic of Congo 🇨🇩
  • Somalia 🇸🇴
  • South Sudan 🇸🇸
  • Sudan 🇸🇩
  • Yemen 🇾🇪
  • Venezuela 🇻🇪
  • Russia 🇷🇺
  • Belarus 🇧🇾

You will have to submit a copy of your passport and all of its pages (including blank pages).

Work Remotely

Applicants must prove that they work remotely using telecommunications technologies as remote employees, freelancers, or self-employed individuals.

It’s important to note that if you or the company you work for provides services to Malta-based companies or individuals, you are not eligible for the Malta digital nomad visa.

Additionally, you must prove that you will continue working remotely in your position and have a guaranteed source of income for at least five cumulative months from the day you submit your application.

Earn 42,000€ per Year (Gross)

There is a minimum income requirement that the main applicant must meet.

You must earn at least 42,000€ per year, before taxes are taken out or paid.

You may not combine incomes with a spouse or partner to meet this requirement.

Additionally, you must submit at least three months of bank statements to prove that you earn at least 3,500€ per month (which equals the annual amount) when applying.

Clean Criminal Record

Applicants must submit a Police Conduct Certificate or certified background check to prove that they have a clean criminal record.

International Health Insurance

Once your Malta digital nomad visa application is approved in principle, which does not mean it is granted yet, you must submit proof of at least one-year of international health insurance coverage in Malta and other EU countries.

We recommend Genki Native’s international health insurance for complete, comprehensive coverage.

Pass a Background Verification Check

While reviewing your Malta digital nomad visa application, you will also have to pass a background verification check. This means the agency will review your previous travel and employment history.

Pro Tip: If you have ever received a Schengen Visa rejection in the past, there is a chance your application could also be rejected. We don’t recommend applying for Malta’s digital nomad visa if this is the case.
