The digital nomad visa allows you to live in Portugal for one year on a D7 visa.. However, it is renewable five times, which after five years of living in Portugal, you can apply for permanent residency.

By the end of this article, you know exactly what you have to do to apply for the Portugal digital nomad visa.

Plus, make sure to read the entire thing because at the end we have a secret about an even easier way you can apply for the visa.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A digital nomad visa is for remote workers, business owners, and freelancers who wish to live in a foreign country for longer than a tourist visa allows.

Technically, these visas are more resident permits, allowing digital nomads to live in the country.

To be eligible for a digital nomad visa, you must work for a foreign company (not one in the country where you’re living), own a business, or work as a freelancer with foreign clients.

This is perfect for digital nomads who want to settle down somewhere without worrying about border-hopping or overstaying their tourist visas.

Why Portugal?

Why not?!

Portugal is one of the hottest trending digital nomad destinations. There are massive communities in Lisbon and Porto. You can find hip cafes, restaurants, bars, and awesome coworking spaces in both of these cities.

Plus, every night you’ll get to experience stunning sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean and enjoy sunny days on the sandy beaches.

Walk through this European country and admire the architecture, art museums, and incredible cuisine of fresh seafood and delicate pastries. Not to mention, the weather is almost always sunny and warm.

Portugal is a leader in the world for digital nomads. They also opened the very first digital nomad village in February 2021.

Another perk of being a holder of the Portugal digital nomad visa is that you’ll have access to the 26 countries in the Schengen Area. For Americans, a tourist visa only allows access to this area for 90 days in a 180-day period. With this visa, you can travel through Europe for an entire year!
